The crackdown, dubbed "Operation Metro Surge," targets Democratic communities. It specifically targets individuals with deportation orders, including Somali immigrants. Critics denounce the aggressive tactics and rising detainee deaths.

The Department of Homeland Security also launched "Operation PARRIS" in Minnesota. This initiative reexamines thousands of refugee cases with new background checks.

Canada's Immigration SHOCKER: Drastic Cuts Announced

Across the border, Canada is dramatically reshaping its immigration system. The federal government will slash permanent resident targets for 2026 to 380,000. This is a significant drop from the 483,000 welcomed in 2024. Targets will remain at 380,000 through 2028.

But the biggest blow hits international students. Canada will halve study permits for new arrivals. The number drops from 305,000 to a mere 155,000.

A major change is on the horizon for settlement. The government proposes extending the qualifying period for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). It will increase from five years to ten years for most sponsored work routes. A consultation on these proposals closes February 12, 2026. Implementation is planned for April 2026. Border security is a top priority. From February 25, 2026, the UK will strictly enforce its Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system. Visitors from 85 visa-free countries must obtain this digital pre-travel permission.
