Calculating the material requirements for new flooring begins with determining the exact square footage of the space. For a perfectly rectangular room, the formula is straightforward: multiply the length of the room by its width. A room measuring 15 feet by 20 feet requires a baseline of 300 square feet of flooring. However, ordering exactly 300 square feet guarantees you will run out of material before the job is complete.
During installation, flooring materials must be cut to fit against walls, maneuver around door jambs, and accommodate vents. These necessary cuts produce offcuts—pieces that are too small or improperly shaped to be used elsewhere. To ensure you have enough usable material, you must calculate a 'waste factor,' an intentional overage added to your baseline square footage.
Standard waste factor guidelines
The industry standard waste factor for most straight-lay flooring—including luxury vinyl plank (LVP), laminate, and standard hardwood—is 10%. If your room requires 300 square feet, you multiply by 1.10, bringing the required purchase amount to 330 square feet. This 10% buffer safely absorbs standard edge cuts and minor manufacturer defects found within the boxes.
If the room layout involves complex geometry, such as angled walls, curved features, or multiple small closets, the waste factor must be increased to 15%. In highly compartmentalized spaces, more planks must be cut and discarded to fit the intricate perimeters, significantly reducing the yield of usable square footage from each box.
Pattern installations demand higher overages
Flooring installed in complex patterns requires substantially higher waste factors due to the strict geometric requirements of the design. A diagonal layout, where planks are laid at a 45-degree angle to the walls, mandates a 15% to 20% waste factor. Every piece meeting a wall must be cut at an angle, drastically increasing the volume of unusable offcuts.
Herringbone or chevron patterns are even more demanding. These installations require precise left and right-aligned boards that must intersect perfectly, leading to waste factors approaching 25% for intricate rooms. When calculating, always round your final footage up to the nearest whole box size, as retailers will not sell partial boxes of flooring.
